SAFEGUARDS- Graphic: Air drop
Today, inadequate or badly timed rainfall is unlikely to proceed
beyond the destruction of crops. During times of good rains and
good harvests, villages may have stored enough grain to avert
starvation. Stored grass and other fodder can supply livestock when
lack of rain shrivels pastures. The expansion of transport networks,
alternate economic opportunities, and government relief efforts have
helped diminished the probability of starvation. Other measures to
insure against famine include planting a variety of drought resistant
crops and adjusting planting techniques and times according on how
the monsoon season begins.
