Triple Point

One of the properties which makes the planet Earth unique is the natural occurance of water is all three phases, solid, liquid, and gas.

The image here shows where the regimes for Earth Venus and Mars atmospheres exist relative to the triple point for water. Whenever water undergoes a change of state energy is stored or released. When water evaporates energy is required to effect this change of state. When these same water molecules condense back into liquid, the same amount of energy is reeased. This is how solar energy over the oceans can be transported to regions over land.
